Trevor,
Thank you for the opportunity to sign up. I am a semi-retired tertiary educated Australian farm manager/agronomist who retired from active farming eight years ago. Four years ago I became involved in Australian foreign aid projects, initially in Cambodia, and later in Bangladesh.
After visiting these countries, and seeing the basics of grain production there, I saw the opportunity to do more, using my local expertise.
I noticed in South Asia, the great number of power tillers ( two wheel tractors) in use. I also saw the need for much of South Asia to 'get on with the job' of conservation farming. However no seed drill for minimum or zero tillage is currently available.
I was able to obtain a modest grant from the Australian Government, and over the last 12 months have (with others) fabricated several no till drills for power tiller. Examples are now in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Lao PDR.
Also the Chinese 2BG-6A rotary tillage seed drill for power tiller has been modified for strip tillage planting.
I will post photos. of the gear in due course.
However a lot of this has been already reported in another forum. have a look at http://www.unapcaem.org/bbs/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=708 and also at http://www.unapcaem.org/bbs/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1417

Thanks Trevor,
I am excited about this website and we already gave the link a prominent place in the FAO/AGS homepage. I will also forward it to some colleagues. I am currently in Brazil leading on a study tour on direct seeding equipment and other implements suitable for small farmers. I have the plan that with this internet platform also especially the African Conservation Tillage Network could be strengthened. Thanks again for this great platform/tool for us.

Hey Trevor,
Good work getting this going. I am currently in Lesotho with PAul Starkey on a intermediate means of transportation study and project...animal carts, bicycles, motorcycles, peddle and motorized three wheelers and Chinese two-wheel tractors. It was thought to be a techical intervention but when I saw prices of 2WTs, 4WTs, bikes and motorcycles already here being 3-4 times higher than in South Asia for the exact same machinery I see it now as a market intervention. FAO is just completing a CA project here with very expensive machinery and little or no ag machinery market linkages. Failed to get anyone buying, but despite that it was good to get farmers/ extensionists/researchers sensitized to CA / zero till. Anyway, look forward to networking with you and others on this website.

Syed, Many thanks for your supportive comments. It is a pity that you have not been able to attend the major agricultural machinery exhibitions (Agritechnica, SIMA, EIMA etc) because the Sudan has great potential in agriculture. Hopefully you will have an opportunity in the future.

Well done Cree. As Rajan suggested the community of farm machinery related staff should grow. Unfortunately, very less activities are happening in the "developing countries" while we hear lots and lots of developments in the developed world. The matter of the fact is that due to "shortage" of funds in the "developing world" agricultural engineering community has not been able to participate at Global Level Exhibitions, Machinery Faires, etc. Thus, new ideas are not being introduced in this part of the world. I wish, pray and suggest that UNCOMA should invest more in such activities. It is now almost 6-7 years I have been unable to attend EIMA - in Bologna, Italy!
