Jim,
Thanks for all of the information. You pose a lot of food for thought.
First of all I advise you to go to Google and look up "power tiller" or "two wheel tractor".
There is a lot of material from China and other parts of the Third World.
I think perhaps a farm of 50 acres is too big for a power tiller. Normally one only plants 1 hectare (2.5 acre) per day with a 12HP power tiller. This is fine in Asia where the farm size may be > 1 acre, and field size may only be 100m x 100m sq.
Don't forget that you have to walk behind the unit, although some have seating systems.
Also the Asian made units do not conform to Western safety and pollution standards, so you may not be able to operate a Chinese power tiller in USA.
I also think you must consider the time frame for planting.
If you wish to plant say 5-10 acres per day, you may be better off with a 25-30HP traditional 4 wheel tractor with a 3PL 2 metre grain drill or a 2 row corn planter. that way you could sow 1 hectare per hour rather than 1 hectare per day with a power tiller. One has the advantage of a 3PL to raise and lower the implements so less manual work required.
Have you priced small used diesel 4 wheel tractors of 25-30HP with a 3PL on them?
Also have a look at the link. I contribute under the name of nswnotill.
James,
Please let us know more of your project with 2 wheel tractors. Are you doing this establishment in Continental USA or perhaps in the Third World somewhere?
There is a reasonable amount of expertise in this forum , and also in some others regarding 2 wheel tractors. Myself and colleagues ar especially interested in the development of conservation farming gear ( no till seed drills) for 2 wheel tractors.
let me know in due course.
