Trevor,
Thanks for the information. FAO has some good stuff on conservation farming especially for small farmers of Asia and Africa. I have chatted quite a few times electronically with Theo Friedrich of FAO, although I have never met him personally.
All of the work that has recently been done with power tiller was summarised at the recent World Congress on Conservation Agriculture in Delhi. I did not attend. However a Bangladeshi colleague presented all f the results, and when I obtain an electronic copy I will post it for others to read.

Jeff,

You might be interested to take a look at the two FAO conservation agriculture sites which can be accessed by the following link:

Perhaps you have already visited these locations but for others who wish to learn more about conservation agriculture they will be very useful.

I believe that a great deal of good work has been undertaken by FAO around the world, particularly by Theo Friedrich and his colleagues. In Iran, for example, I was able to see at first hand how important it was for this practice to be fully evaluated in the marginal rainfall areas. Excellent results are reported for Kazahkstan and Brazil. However, the mouldboard plough and harrows (disc and tine) have been utilised successfully for hundreds of years to kill weeds and to create a good seedbed. My concern is that conservation agriculture depends greatly on the use of chemical sprays and requires a high standard of management to control the emergence of different weed species over time. I believe that the best solution is to undertake careful comparative field trials over a number of years and this is the case in Iran.
